L3 sporthorses offers a working student empowerment and education program for those wanting to get their foot in the door of the horse industry. In our program you will learn the basics of grooming, barn management, and equine care. Alongside your equine knowledge skills being built, we will help empower upcoming youth on education of the horse industry, signs of unhealthy work environments, how to set healthy boundaries for yourself, how to read red flags in employment ads, educate independent contractors on their state rights, as well as help you build a resume and give you a reference for your apprenticeship. Our goal is to continue offering opportunities for new riders to get a safe start as well as educate them in the best way possible to protect future generations from exploitation within the horse industry.
My Story...
In my time in the horse industry, like many others, I have had to work my way up through the ranks. Whilst I am grateful for each and every opportunity, that did not come without a price. I have worked for many people who have: waited weeks/months to give me my paycheck, not respected my personal time off, been denied days off, discriminated against for neurodivergence, not had my end of the agreement fulfilled (such as not receiving lessons/instruction for work), told there was no room for raises only to find my replacements were fairly financially compensated, witnessed abuse of equines, had professional opportunities withheld from me, been subjected to bullying, triangulation, and workplace mobbing while employed. Unfortunately this is a very common experience for many young aspiring equestrians. Their stories flood social media and have sparked important conversations about change within the industry. Many youth each year seek out working student postions in an attempt to move up the ladder of the horse industry, then to find themselves in very unsafe situations. Some students have even relocated onto these properties only to find out all that glitters isn't gold. Myself as well as former colleagues, have decided to pull together curriculum, and offer this program to empower and educate the youth in our community to better protect them against exploitation practices as well as model how a healthy barn environment should be ran.
